SHALALAE JAMIL
DECEMBER 16 2010 - JANUARY 16 2010

Artist Bio:

Shalalae Jamil was born and raised in Pakistan. Educated at Bennington College and The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, she has exhibited and curated work in Pakistan, the United States and the U.K. Her work is in several private collections including the Arts Council in Pakistan and the Devi Art Foundation in India.

Using photography, film, video, installation and elements of performance, her works target home as a region consumed by the collisions between religion, tradition and modernity. Continually investigating how perception and meaning are altered by the shifting parameters of private and public space, she incorporates autobiography as a tool to address the ambiguities of cultural belonging.

Her works lend voice to various ideological conflicts that shape contemporary life in South Asia and its Diaspora.

Currently the artist lives and works in Karachi.
